Oh my word, these four sweet humans! It’s always such a joy to see and connect with Althea, Daniel and their kiddos. I’m so grateful for their willingness to meet me in a sudden, windy, winter snowstorm and play! The joy of throwing snowballs and dancing together in the snowflakes was just so sweet! It was cold, and still, their love, connection and joy is just beautiful (as always).
I’m going to let Althea’s gorgeous, poignant poem about motherhood do the real introduction here. (Also, you should so go check out Dan’s amazing work over in Madison’s 40 under 40!)
“Motherhood
Makes you forget the quiet
The whisper of your own breath in the stillness
The rhythm your heart beats into your back when you recline
makes your body new
Makes it plush and strong
engorged with tenderness
wide and swollen with power
Stretched
I love the lightening bolts across my hips and thighs
the streaks
the stripes
the verses
the arias of creation and triumph forged beneath my bellybutton
singing
I, too, am a wellspring of life
I pushed and persevered
I was laid open and overcame
Yes, motherhood
Makes you forget the quiet
The whisper of your own breath in the stillness
The rhythm your heart beats into your back when you recline
makes your heart new
drumming
thunderous with tenderness
full
a rush of wind in the wilderness
cool
fluttering
fresh
an ayre of nurturance and embrace
singing
I, too, am a wellspring of life
I love and love hard
I am laid open and unconditional
Laid open and unconditional”
